Dolly Parton, American country music icon and actor, dies at 80. She initially found success with country star Porter Wagoner in the 1960s before embarking on a solo career marked by hit songs like “Joshua”, “Jolene”, “Coat of Many Colours”, “The Bargain Store”, “I Will Always Love You”, “Here You Come Again”, “9 to 5″, and “Islands in the Stream”. A highly skilled singer-songwriter and one of the all-time actors known for thoughtful narratives and distinctive vocals, Parton won many major awards, including 10 Grammys, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999.
She also starred in Steel Magnolias, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and 9 to 5. Her Dollywood theme park, which is currently a part of a network of attractions, opened in 1986. At the age of 80, Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, in Nashville.
Dolly Parton was born in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, on January 19, 1946. In 1964 Parton met Carl Dean outside a laundromat in Nashville. He owned an asphalt-paving business. The couple married two years later. Although he maintained a low profile, Dean was influential in Parton’s career, and he inspired the song “Jolene”. Parton once said, “God has been good to me. He gave me Carl Dean. And that was the perfect man that I needed.” Parton and Dean were together until his death when he passed at 82 in 2025.
Dolly and Dean had no children, but they lived happily for almost 59 years together.
