The second reading of the Rivers State 2026 Bill, which Governor Siminalayi Fubara introduced to the House of Assembly on July 10, has been approved.
According to reports, the Assembly took this action yesterday following a heated discussion among its members regarding its main elements. Two days after Fubara led an elder statesman, Dr Sam Jaja, to meet with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike in the state capital of Port Harcourt, the legislators met again.
The end of the meeting reportedly made it possible for the lawmakers to resume their budget review.
Speaking about the “Budget of Resilience for Growth and Development” appropriations bill, Speaker Martin Amaewhule recalled that Fubara introduced the bill to the House roughly six weeks prior.
He pledged that the Assembly would carry out careful legislative scrutiny and oversight to ensure that appropriated funds were used prudently.
Amaewhule urged the House’s various committees to make sure that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) that fall under the House’s legislative purview were invited to the budget defence session.
Majority Leader Major Jack, who spearheaded the discussion earlier, focused on the estimate’s revenue framework and emphasised that the bill as it was drafted would result in quick development with appropriate legislative input.
